Rising British-Nigerian artists IYKZ and Maleek Berry have joined forces for new single “They Know (Wan Mo)”. Written and produced by IYKZ and Maleek, the single is part of the growing Afro Bashment movement and is already a hit on streaming platforms, with almost 150,000 streams on Spotify alone since being released independently only a few weeks ago. The track’s success also extends to radio, with notable support from renowned UK radio DJs Twin B and DJ Target on BBC Radio 1Xtra and Jay London on Capital XTRA.
With the single off to a strong start, IYKZ is keeping the momentum going with the release of the music video directed by Meji Alabi (Zak Abel, Maleek Berry, Sneakbo) for JM Films. Shot in an underground warehouse in Hackney, east London, the monochromatic visuals provide the perfect backdrop for the gritty, hard-hitting street anthem, which also pays homage to the two rappers’ Nigerian heritage.
Speaking on the record, IYKZ says, “‘Wan mo’ means ‘they know’ in the Nigerian Yoruba language. I’m Igbo but Maleek is Yoruba, so we blend both dialects throughout the record. It’s a patriotic street anthem. We want our voices to be heard. We linked up and did everything in Maleek’s bedroom. By the end of the session, we knew we had something special.”
With Maleek producing much of IYKZ’s early material, it’s not the first time they have collaborated or appeared in the same video together. “Working with IYKZ is always magic”, Maleek says of their partnership. “I love working with people who have a deep understanding of music, so it’s always bound to be something special when we collaborate.”
“They Know (Wan Mo)” is available to buy and stream now and is one of several new singles IYKZ will be releasing over the coming months. Keep up to date with all future releases and news by following him online:
With over 2 million streams across SoundCloud and YouTube already under his belt, as well as continued support from the likes of BBC 1Xtra, Capital Xtra, Beat FM London and Beat FM Lagos, and leading African music tastemakers, 19-year old Nigerian Afrobeats singer and songwriter SK is back with his brand new single titled ‘Ose’, premiered last night on Beat FM Lagos.
Born and raised in London, SK – real name Sekunola Harrison-Obafemi – first broke into the Afrobeats music landscape in 2014 with his massive hit single ‘Let’s Go There’, and has gone on to gain further notoriety with his acclaimed 2016 singles ‘Independent’ and ‘Mr Man’.
2017 has seen SK tease us with two well-received tracks ‘Jammy’ and ‘Original’ which was produced by DJ Coublon (Kiss Daniel, Yemi Alade, Iyanya), in the lead up to this brand new single ‘Ose’, which was produced by Producer Boy, who has previously worked with fast-rising UK Afrobeats group NewAgeMuzik.
Taken from his forthcoming debut EP, which is currently receiving its finishing touches, ‘Ose’ is vintage SK as we have come to expect from the London-based artist – the record showcases SK’s glorious vocals, infectious flow, and engaging song-writing, backed by lush Afrobeats flavoured music landscapes.
Speaking about the inspiration for ‘Ose’, SK says, “I have been a fan of the global Afrobeats scene for a long time. I feel like, now I have found my place, and am ready to show the world what I can do. This song stemmed from the idea of being thankful to the woman you love. I wanted to let the ladies know that they’re appreciated. Huge credits to Producer Boy for putting the instrumentals together like this. As soon as I heard it, the rest of the song immediately came to me”.
