Soulful sounds from Senegal.
For her first body of work, Aida Sock is delivering a piece of art that impressively blends genres and she’s termed it ‘Soulful Afro Hip-Hop’. The abbreviation of which is the title of her E.P SAHH.
The rhythm and performance of SAHH bother on the alternative as the singer blends modern soul with melodic hip-hop, traditional Senegalese instruments and a little dash of electronic vibes.
Both hip-hop and experimental electro music, blended with Senegalese references and remixed local sounds, represent the major influences of the producer’s first opus. Here and there, some great references to the Beat Scene and its leader Flying Lotus can be found. We may also think of Sun Ra as an intellectual and visual reference, notably because of the Afro-futuristic imagery proposed by the two artists.
In search for the thrill.
Ahead of a full release for her E.P SAHH, Aida Sock shares the visuals for the first single ‘The Highest’.
Shot in a desert, directed and edited by Youngfresh, the video takes the Senegalese musician/model on a search for something close to the heart. Something like home?
A musical culture melting pot!
Senegalese singer Aida Sock’s latest single “Sebalite”, sees a fusion of some of the finest cultural minds, with Ugandan producer Baddest Kanmba working with Mali’s Diango Diabate – who played the cords on the Xalam (a traditional guitar), to produce the cross border groovy vibe of the single.
Shot by a young Senegalese Director Mo Shady, the video was co-directed by Aida, allowing her the creative space to share personal moments of her life through different codes and images.
Her message? Whatever happens, no matter how hard it gets, patience is key as tomorrow always comes.
When it’s nice you do it twice!
Even if it’s about 5 years after. Kicking off his 2019 with hard-hitting freestyle bars, Senegalese rapper Elzo Jamdong, shares Free Season 2.
