Born Ogechi into a family of two boys in the mid-eighties, O9ECHI began his musical career at the age of eighteen, singing along to the songs of Trybesmen and Eminem in the early 2000s. Ogechi started from humble beginnings and suffered from criticism from his peers who thought he was wasting his time doing music, at that time the music industry was not thriving. He still persevered.
A Rapper/Singer/Songwriter, O9ECHI, recorded his debut solo single under another name ‘TRIX’ in 2003 called “No Be You”, this Single became popular in the streets of Awka Anambra state. This single later got short-listed at the Rainbownet talent hunt in the 2005 where Ogechi came out 3rd position and best Rap in the talent hunt in Awka, UNIZIK. The same talent hunt allowed Ogechi the opportunity to meet “Terry G” when he was performing with “Faze of the Plantashun Boyz”. Terry G later became viral that year. O9echi was invited to the Awards ceremony of the Rainbownet talent hunt where He saw M.I Abaga perform, M.I went viral the next year.
It’s no surprise that in UNIZIK, local musicians from Awka and Enugu, Nigeria would Ogechi to their studio to feature on their songs and they would pay him for 16 bars of his lyrics. Ogechi provided a commercial kind of rap and he was popularly called the ‘freestyle’ of the east. (He was likened to Freestyle, one of the members of the Trybesmen) because of his Flow and delivery.
At that time in the Nigerian industry, it was not easy for upcoming artists to get their songs played on the radio or other media; it was especially difficult for Ogechi then because he was a student and no matter how hard he worked, he could barely afford to buy studio time to record his music. His parents were very supportive nonetheless. After completing his NYSC (Youth service Corp program) He worked for 3 years occasionally recording as much as He could so as to hone his skills; He still couldn’t get access to radio and media houses. He had no connections.
Ogechi left for the United States in 2012 for a Masters program in Information technology; He was on sabbatical in music.
2016 was the emergence of O9echi, Ogechi fell sick and in gratitude to God for a quick recovery He recorded His first single as “O9echi” called “Get out of Ma Face”; it was a Christian rap song, later accompanied by a Video. The song received great reviews from underground MCs in the US, that made o9echi to reenact his interest in music again. He recorded a couple more Christian singles that year.
The Breakthrough: In late 2017, o9echi decided to go back to Circular music. He recorded a single called “Start Dancing” and promoted it in Nigeria; to his surprise this Single rose to the Charts on Rhythm FM’s Top 7 & jams at 7 in early 2018 and debuted on Number 5 position amongst top songs in the Nigerian industry that year. The song later aired on other top Nigerian Radio stations like Soundcity FM, Cool FM Lagos, Wazobia FM, just to mention a few. He shot a music video for the song with the international acclaimed Video Director, Director Baines in Atlanta, USA who has shot videos for Migos and other popular US artists; this video received over 120,000 views in a month of its release and over 800,000 views on Facebook.
JAJ the Meccadon of Rhythm FM fell in love with the single “Start Dancing” and gave it great airtime on his Top7 show but JAJ challenged o9echi saying and we quote “Start dancing is massive song but artists like o9echi are possibly a one hit wonder, it might be surprising to see another HIT from Him”. This excited and encouraged o9echi and 2 months later, o9echi recorded his first single in 2018 titled Maadness, He featured Slimcase the most trending Nigerian artist in 2018 on the track and this track went straight to number 3 on the Top7 jams at 7 on Rhythm FM and JAJ loved it.
New single Maadness has enjoyed massive airplay on radio stations in Nigeria and on its day of release on social media, half a million views on Instagram from combined Instagram handles. The best of the best dancers across Nigeria and Ghana including Africans in diaspora have done dance videos for the song as the song is a very energetic dance song, popularly known for the madness in delivery. Slimcase said and we quote “Ogechi ! Maadness is a very Big song and I am glad to be on the track”. Dancers that have danced on the track are @Donflexx, @kaffydance one of the biggest dancers in Africa, @incredibleziggi of Ghana, @Sayrahchips, @uncleAzeez, just to mention a few.
O9echi started the first of its kind, a freestyle show that airs every Sundays on social media called “Maadness freestyle show” it features o9echi dropping freestyles weekly using popular afrobeat/rap instrumentals. This show attracts a lot of comments from fans in Africa and has been engaging ever since.
The year 2018 has been superb for him, dropping a fierce single, Maadness and featuring the most trending artist in Africa, Slimcase; a song which has enjoyed adequate airplay and acceptance by his fans.
An all-round performer, O9ECHI has thrilled audiences around the country with not only perfect harmonies, flow and delivery but also with stunning energy which have left viewers awe stricken for weeks…..!
O9ECHI holds a MSc in Information technology and currently works as a Network Architect for a major Telecommunications company on the USA; he is actually the lead Architect in that company. How he combines music and a fulltime job, is outstanding.
